poema inspirou John William Waterhouse a pintar o quatro homônimo
On either side of the river lie | De ambos os lados do rio se encontram |
Long fields of barley and of rye, | Longos campos de cevada e de centeio, |
That clothe the wold and meet the sky; | Que cobrem a planície e encontram o céu; |
And thro' the field the road run by | E pelo campo a estrada corre |
To many-towered Camelot; | Para a Camelot de muitas torres; |
And up and down the people go, | E as pessoas vão para cima e para baixo, |
Gazing where the lilies flow | Contemplando onde os lírios flutuam, |
Round an island there below, | Há uma ilha mais abaixo, |
The island of Shalott. | A ilha de Shalott. |
... | ... |
Willows whiten, aspens quiver, | Salgueiros embranquecem, álamos tremem, |
Little breezes dusk and shiver | Ligeiras brisas, crepúsculo e calafrio |
Thro' the wave that runs for ever | Pela onda que corre eternamente |
By the island in the river | Pela ilha no rio |
Flowing down to Camelot. | Boiando até Camelot. |
Four grey walls, and four grey towers, | Quatro paredes cinzentas, e quatro torres cinzentas, |
Overlook a space of flowers, | Negligenciam um espaço de flores, |
And the silent isle embowers | E a ilha silenciosa cobre de sombras |
The Lady of Shalott. | A Lady de Shalott. |
... | ... |
Only reapers, reaping early, | Somente ceifeiros, ceifando cedo, |
In among the bearded barley | Por entre a cevada suportada |
Hear a song that echoes cheerly | Ouve-se uma canção que ecoa alegremente |
From the river winding clearly | Do rio que venta claramente |
Down to tower'd Camelot; | Até a elevada Camelot; |
And by the moon the reaper weary, | E ao luar, o ceifeiro cansado, |
Piling sheaves in uplands airy, | Empilhando maços em planaltos arejados, |
Listening, whispers "'tis the fairy | Escutando, sussurra "esta é fada" |
The Lady of Shalott." | A Lady de Shalott". |
... | ... |
There she weaves by night and day | Lá ela tece dia e noite |
A magic web with colours gay, | Uma teia mágica com cores vistosas, |
She has heard a whisper say, | Ela ouviu um sussurro dizendo, |
A curse is on her if she stay | Que a maldição cairá sobre ela se continuar a |
To look down to Camelot. | Olhar para baixo, para Camelot. |
She knows not what the curse may be, | Ela não sabe o que a maldição pode ser, |
And so she weaveth steadily, | E assim ela tece continuamente, |
And little other care hath she, | E outro pouco cuidado tem ela, |
The Lady of Shalott. | A Lady de Shalott. |
And moving through a mirror clear | E movendo-se através de um espelho claro |
That hangs before her all the year, | Que pende diante dela todo o ano, |
Shadows of the world appear. | Sombras do mundo aparecem. |
There she sees the highway near | Lá ela vê a estrada se aproximar |
Winding down to Camelot; | Ventando sobre Camelot; |
And sometimes thro' the mirror blue | E às vezes através do azul espelho |
The knights come riding two and two. | Os cavaleiros vêm cavalgando dois a dois. |
She hath no loyal knight and true, | Ela não tem nenhum cavaleiro leal e verdadeiro, |
The Lady Of Shalott. | A Lady de Shalott. |
... | ... |
But in her web she still delights | Mas em sua teia, ela ainda contempla |
To weave the mirror's magic sights, | As mágicas visões do espelho, |
For often thro' the silent nights | Frequentemente pelas noites silenciosas |
A funeral, with plumes and lights | Um funeral, com plumagens e luzes, |
And music, went to Camelot; | E a música foi para Camelot; |
Or when the moon was overhead, | E quando a Lua pendia do alto, |
Came two young lovers lately wed. | Dois jovens amantes tardiamente se casam. |
"I am half sick of shadows," said | "Estou meio enjoada das sombras", disse |
The Lady Of Shalott. | A Lady de Shalott. |
... | ... |
A bow-shot from her bower-eaves, | Em uma disparada do pequeno quarto dela, |
He rode between the barley sheaves, | Ele cavalgou por entre os maços de cevada, |
The sun came dazzling thro' the leaves, | O sol veio ofuscante por entre as folhas, |
And flamed upon the brazen greaves | E ardeu por sobre as canelas despudoradas |
Of bold Sir Lancelot. | Do ousado Sir Lancelot. |
A red-cross knight for ever kneel'd | Um cavaleiro de cruz-vermelha, eternamente ajoelhado |
To a lady in his shield, | Para uma senhora em seu escudo, |
That sparkled on the yellow field, | Que brilhava no campo amarelo, |
Beside remote Shalott. | Ao lado da remota Shalott. |
... | ... |
His broad clear brow in sunlight glow'd; | Sua clara sobrancelha brilhou à luz do sol; |
On burnish'd hooves his war-horse trode; | Em cascos polidos, seu cavalo de guerra trilhou; |
From underneath his helmet flow'd | Debaixo de seu capacete fluiam |
His coal-black curls as on he rode, | Seus cachos negros como carvão enquanto cavalgava, |
As he rode down to Camelot. | Conforme cavalgava para Camelot. |
From the bank and from the river | Da margem e do rio |
he flashed into the crystal mirror, | Ele apareceu no espelho cristalino, |
"Tirra Lirra," by the river | "Tirra lirra", pelo rio |
Sang Sir Lancelot. | Cantou Sir Lancelot. |
She left the web, she left the loom, | Ela deixou a teia, ela deixou o tear, |
She made three paces thro' the room, | Ela deu três passos pelo quarto, |
She saw the water-lily bloom, | Ela viu o lírio aquático florescer, |
She saw the helmet and the plume, | Ela viu o elmo e a plumagem, |
She looked down to Camelot. | Ela olhou para Camelot. |
Out flew the web and floated wide; | Para fora voou a teia, flutuando para longe; |
The mirror cracked from side to side; | O espelho rachou de lado a lado; |
"The curse is come upon me," cried | "A maldição caiu sobre mim", chorou |
The Lady of Shalott. | A Lady de Shalott. |
... | ... |
In the stormy east-wind straining, | O tempestuoso vento leste forçando, |
The pale yellow woods were waning, | Os pálidos bosques amarelos estavam minguando, |
The broad stream in his banks complaining. | O amplo riacho em suas margens reclamando. |
Heavily the low sky raining | O baixo céu chovendo fortemente |
Over towered Camelot; | Por sobre a dominada Camelot; |
Down she came and found a boat | Ela desceu e encontrou um barco |
Beneath a willow left afloat, | Sob um flutuante salgueiro partido, |
And round about the prow she wrote | E em volta da proa, ela escreveu |
The Lady of Shalott | A Lady de Shalott. |
... | ... |
And down the river's dim expanse | E descendo o extenso e turvo rio |
Like some bold seer in a trance, | Como algum vidente ousado em transe, |
Seeing all his own mischance - | Vendo toda sua própria miséria - |
With a glassy countenance | Com um semblante paralisado |
Did she look to Camelot. | Ela olhou para Camelot. |
And at the closing of the day | E ao fim do dia |
She loosed the chain and down she lay; | Ela soltou as correntes e deitou-se; |
The broad stream bore her far away, | O amplo riacho levou-a para longe, |
The Lady of Shalott. | A Lady de Shalott. |
... | ... |
Heard a carol, mournful, holy, | Ouvido um hino, pesaroso, sagrado, |
Chanted loudly, chanted lowly, | Cantado ruidosamente, cantou humildemente, |
Till her blood was frozen slowly, | Até que o sangue dela fosse lentamente congelando, |
And her eyes were darkened wholly, | E seus olhos ficassem completamente escurecidos, |
Turn'd to towered Camelot. | Voltada para a elevada Camelot. |
For ere she reach'd upon the tide | Antes que com a maré ela alcançasse |
The first house by the water-side, | A primeira casa da costa, |
Singing in her song she died, | Cantando sua canção, ela morreu, |
The Lady of Shalott. | A Lady de Shalott. |
... | ... |
Under tower and balcony, | Sob a torre e a sacada, |
By garden-wall and gallery, | Do muro do jardim e da galeria, |
A gleaming shape she floated by, | Um vulto cintilante, ela flutuou, |
Dead-pale between the houses high, | Uma palidez morta dentre elevadas casas, |
Silent into Camelot. | Silencio pairando em Camelot. |
Out upon the wharfs they came, | Do distante cais, eles vieram, |
Knight and burgher, lord and dame, | Cavaleiro e burguês, lorde e dama, |
And round the prow they read her name, | E em volta da proa, eles leram o nome dela, |
The Lady of Shalott. | A Lady de Shalott. |
... | ... |
Who is this? And what is here? | Quem é esta? O que faz aqui? |
And in the lighted palace near | Com o palácio iluminado nas proximidades |
Died the sound of royal cheer; | Morreu o som da real celebração; |
And they crossed themselves for fear, | E eles se cruzaram por medo, |
All the knights at Camelot; | Todos os Cavaleiros de Camelot; |
But Lancelot mused a little space | Mas Lancelot refletiu por um tempo, |
He said, "She has a lovely face; | Ele disse, "ela tem uma face adorável; |
God in his mercy lend her grace, | Deus em Sua clemência empresta graça a ela, |
The Lady of Shalott." | À Lady de Shalott". |
